Navy Blue has been a classic for centuries. The origin of this color’s name was first coined in 1748 from British Royal Navy and has been evolving ever since. It was the color first worn by officers and subsequently has been adapted to uniforms of sailors all around the world.
Navy Blue is one of those colors, which transcends socioeconomic backgrounds, professions, and cultures. Navy Blue can be worn both casually and formally and its range spans from business suiting to jeans to an evening gown and yet remains timeless. For this reason and many others, I love Navy Blue. It is a color, which I consider one of the most versatile and seasonless. Navy Blue easily goes with any other color, as well as, all the hues in its’ own family of Blue. Navy Blue can easily be incorporated in a small way through Accessories & Footwear or a larger way through Clothing.
Let’s set sail as I Navy-gate you through Navy.
There are four Parts to NAVY-GATING Navy:
Part One: The Maiden Voyage! Shoes and Accessories
Part Two: Due North! Navy Tops
Part Three:Due South! Pants and Skirts
Part Four: “Dress Blues”! Dresses & Jumpsuits
Part One: The Maiden Voyage! Shoes and Accessories
If you’re taking a maiden voyage with Navy Blue, I suggest you start out in a small way; you can do this by either adding Footwear or Accessories to your wardrobe. If you have no Navy Blue whatsoever, except a pair of jeans—and most everyone owns a pair of jeans, which are Navy Blue, then start there. If you are a seasoned Navy Blue wearer then these are great additions to your collection.
Let’s set sail South of the knee with shoes!
For a more casual daytime look, the Ancient Greek Sandals Clio Gladiator Sandals, the Chloé Wedge Sandals or Proenza Schouler Suede Grommet Ankle-Strap Sandals are all fabulous and different heal heights and styles. If your outfit is a suit or a dressier outfit, then the Christian Louboutin Victorina Flame Suede Pump in Night or the Charlotte Olympia Dolly Karung Pumps are great choices. If you prefer a platform, then buy the Paul Andrew Stanton Platform Sandals or the Jimmy Choo ‘Kaytrin’ Sandals.
Navy Blue Accessories can paired with most any color out there and add an interesting, eye catching and sometimes-unexpected dash of color to an outfit.
Let’s start with Handbags, as what woman isn’t waiting for an opportunity to buy a new Handbag! The Mansur Gavriel Navy Leather Circle Bag is a beautiful geometric shape and definitely a piece to talk about. Either the Sophie Hulme ‘Albion’ Tote or the 3.1 Phillip Lim ’31 Hour’ Leather Tote are style conscious choices to take to work. The Ralph Lauren Matte Alligator Soft Ricky Bag is a showstopper and is so versatile it can be worn both casually with jeans or with a more elegant look. A clutch is also a great way to go Navy! For a more formal evening affair, there is the alligator Judith Leiber Couture Coffered Crocodile Minaudiere or if you need a more tailored, casual choice go with the Proenza Schouler Large Lunch Bag With Grommets.
A belt is also a way to incorporate Navy Blue into your wardrobe. The Ralph Lauren Vachetta Leather Belt belt is simply so chic and polished and will look great with trousers or jeans.
Set your sight on the horizon with these Sunglasses! Self-Portrait + Le Specs Luxe Cat-Eye Acetate Sunglasses, Dior Cat-eye Mirrored Sunglasses or Céline Aviator Acetate Sunglasses are great options.
