Runway Report: Camilla and Marc | New York Fall 2019 RTW

Divine Proportion had divine Fashion Week timing! The Golden Ratio is said to be the inspiration for the collection. The golden ratio,  I think we all remember from the Fibonacci sequence from math? It is the sequence of the Nautilus shell, flower petals, DNA, and most everything in nature. In design, it is the Pyramids of Giza; Michelangelo’s Creation in the Sistine Chapel, and Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and on… Basically anything in nature has this sequence, proportions and thus the golden ratio. This was a very interesting thing to discover as an Art student in college. It is said to be in the Design and Art world, the perfect proportion that gives you the ultimate eye catching WOW factor.

In Camilla and Marc’s Fall 2019 Collection, the proportions of most of the collection offered an interesting take on classic silhouettes. Whether it was the Blazers linear tailoring, higher neckline, and button placement-taking the cue from an empire cut and extending it down. The cropped flair pants and jacket’s proportions made this line look fresh and interesting. This is where I see the Golden Ratio put to use. All the pants are different styles, yet tailored beautifully and lend to interesting silhouettes: cropped, cropped flairs, long flairs or wide leg. Whether moving the bust line or waist higher or using a wide belt to extend the waist higher, this unexpected use of proportion lends itself to a sleek column gracing the wearer with an architectural base. The waist isn’t where you would expect it to be and it works. The dresses are a lot more feminine, countering, and clinging to the body. These are perhaps the flirtier side to the more menswear inspired tailored pieces.

pastedGraphic.pngThe tailoring, design, choice of fabrics, and contoured stitching all create a look with a detail ever so subtle, yet powerful. It quietly screams Linearly Lovely! Texture is varied throughout the collection from linen to mohair to patent to silk to wool and more. It is the very refined details such as: the vented arms blazer, the stitch work, and cut which is seen in the cognac patent leather skirt and white dress. Subtle, yet draws attention and creates design. Most of the tailored pieces are where you see the divine proportion idea put into the design. It makes these pieces and the collection something for our eyes to process differently and elevates it enough to make the piece look new and eye catching.
